The Brief

What the client needed.

A painter who had been renting shared studios for a decade signed a lease on her first solo commercial space in Mile End. The unit was essentially a rectangle: white walls, painted concrete floor, one large North-facing window, a single ceiling outlet. She wanted it to feel like a real studio, with room to sleep one night a week when the work ran late.

What We Did

The work, in sequence.

We designed and built a 14-foot storage wall that doubles as a room divider: closed white-oak cabinets below, open shelves above, and a fold-out single bed behind one of the larger panels. Under the North window, a 16-foot built-in bench with lift-up lids for flat-file storage of her works on paper. New ceiling track lighting on three circuits, dimmable. Total project, including design, fabrication, and install: six weeks.

The Result

What changed.

The artist held her first solo show in the space six months later. The bed has been slept in roughly once a week since — exactly as planned.
